  • The Principal Investigator (PI) on a research or QI project must be a GME faculty member. Residents may serve as Co-Investigators or Sub-Investigators. Fellows may serve as PI, with the expectation that a GME faculty member will serve as a Co-Investigator or Sub-Investigator.

  • Yes, you can participate in research with non-faculty members. Note, however, that the Investigator must seek IRB approval through independent means (e.g., through the hospital’s contracted IRB, IRB utilized by a study sponsor). Western University IRB will provide oversight for research led by GME faculty only.

  • A change to the study team is considered a change to the protocol and must be reviewed and approved by the IRB before implementation. The request for change should be made electronically via IRBnet utilizing the Request to Amend a Currently Approved Protocol form. Changes will be reviewed initially by the IRB Chair. The IRB Chair will notify the investigator if the changes must be reviewed by full Board review, expedited review, or if they qualify for exempt certification (which is often the case when adding team members).
